- Education & financial support from industry partners
- Opportunities to connect with potential cofounders, customers, partners and investors
Our Startup Story
The idea for a ‘startup launchpad’ was formed when community entrepreneurs Christian and Victoria MacLean (also founders of Startup Calgary) met fellow tech entrepreneur Pieter Boekhoff at the annual Grow Conference in Vancouver in August of 2011. They wanted a shared place where tech founders and startups could work alongside one another and not have to “do it alone.” Pieter Boekhoff was leasing some space in the trendy area of Inglewood and offered to convert his office into what the prouldy named “AcceleratorYYC”. With personal investments of time, capital, and passion, AcceleratorYYC was up and running and launched with 6 coworking members in 3 weeks.
Entering summer of 2012, Christian and Victoria decided to step away from AcceleratorYYC to focus on their growing startup called BeauCoo (which closed $1M funding in September 2012). AcceleratorYYC continued on, and near the end of August 2012, AcceleratorYYC received some funding from Alberta Innovates Technology Futures to expand its programming and community involvement. Subsequently Jenn Egroff was hired as Community Liason, then later promoted to Director for AcceleratorYYC. She dedicated 12 months to supporting members and connecting the Calgary startup community.
Hannah Cree is now the Director of AcceleratorYYC, she has energy and passion! She has worked with hundreds of startups to medium sized businesses and her background is a great mix of entrepreneurship, marketing, media, training and creative writing.
Within its first 2 years of operations, AcceleratorYYC has been able to impact and accelerate over 75+ startups. Our members won the “A100 One-to-Watch Award” at the Startup Calgary Launch Party in both 2011 & 2012 and many of our members have also received media exposure with the Calgary Herald, Global TV, CTV, and Techvibes (among others.) AcceleratorYYC is now a pillar in Calgary’s community and a hub of startup activity with many amazing members, friends, supporters and successes!
AcceleratorYYC began as a startup and in an effort to support the startup community, Pieter Boekhoff announced in November 2013 that AcceleratorYYC is now a nonprofit organization. The nonprofit board and board of advisors is filled with a wealth of knowledge, specifically in the startup world.
AcceleratorYYC’s vision is to entrench Calgary as a global leader in tech, energy, social innovation and enterprise technology.
